Thanks for the suggestions.  I don't see any caches mentioned in the BIOS setup screens that I could do much of anything about.  I don't really understand that much about all the BIOS entries, so maybe I just missed them.  Any thoughts about what I should be looking for ?


As for safe mode, I thought that had more to do with the operating system than the BIOS.  Anyway, I don't see anything about it in the manual for the motherboard.  I did find a few references on the web about F8 (and for my motherboard F5), but I don't seem to get any useful results with that.  I'm probably doing something wrong.


Well, I'm away for a few days.  Maybe I'll have time to work on this some more when I get back.

Often OS/2 (including eCS) installs easier if you go into your BIOS and
turn off all the caches or/and if your BIOS has a safe mode, select
that. The install will be slower but hopefully successful. Once
installed you can go back to the BIOS and turn on caches etc
