Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

Julian, Peter, Robert:

Thanks for the information about the key file. I do have a diskette drive on the computer, so I don't anticipate any problem reading the file.

But all this begs the question of what the file looks like. I haven't seen any description anywhere and as far as I know, I have no examples. Does it have to have a particular name? Is it a text file ? If so, what does it look like? Perhaps five lines laid out like the registration entry screen? Or maybe nine lines with a line for each entry field?

I suppose I could experiment a bit, but I thought I'd ask here first. Anyway I have no inkling whether it's some kind of encoded format.

Dave,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try when I get the time to get back to trying the installation.

Subject: [Discussion] Trying to install eCS 2.0 Silver

I'm sure this must have been covered somewhere, but I have not been able to find it.

I am trying to install eCS 2.0 Silver (RC7).

After booting from the CD, I accept almost all the defaults offered by the installation program: Easy installation, Panorama video, no ACPI, etc. As far as I can tell, the installer is doing a good job identifying the hardware. About the only change I make is to add a serial port controller. For sound, I pick the first item - Universal driver.

After entering the registration information (Is there any way to generate the diskette that can be used to enter this information ? It's, of course, a bit of a nuisance to have to keep entering it each time I try again to get the installation done.), the actual installation starts with the blue progress bar running across the bottom of the screen.

It all seems to be going as expected. However, when it gets to the part shown as 'Merging additional driver selections ...', things go awry. The blue bar continues to move, but nothing seems to be happening. I have let it run a few hours just in case it needed the time, but it's pretty clear the system is stuck. No keystrokes I can think of accomplish anything. Even Ctrl-Alt-Del has no effect. All I seem to be able to do is hit the Off or Reset button.

Can anybody tell me what I can do to get beyond this point ? If it has been covered somewhere else, can someone point me to that ?

I would appreciate any suggestions.
