[Discussion] Hard Drive Partition Sizes

I agree completely. I keep all my biggest files (photos, movies, music, stuff I don't access every day) an an external drive, and I back that up to a _different_ external drive. This frees up space on the internal HHD, making most everything run faster, and it also reduces the time for my regular backups.

When one of my external drives stopped working, I called LaCie (the manufacturer) for tech support. The tech rep told me that they get a lot of calls from people reporting external drive problems. When they ask about a backup, the customer usually says "That drive _is_ the backup."

As it turned out, it was the drive's power supply (part of the line cord) that had failed. My actual drive and all of its data were fine; LaCie overnighted me a replacement power cord.
