Skype for Linux is considered still beta, they have working webcam and are
trying to better the sound. Skype is one of those things that you install
see if it works by testing your components with it, and using what does
work, audio and webcam or just audio.
Since you asked about running it from a USB stick, there are a lot of
distros which will fit, you need one with QT and a sound server built in
according to Skype's help but they don't mention any particular one. People
using Ubunto say that there are sound issue that are fixable.
You know you could get a bigger hard drive, too, it would be less than 100.
as an example: http://www.comptick.com/r40-hd25-120.html 120GB for $70.
Then you could put whatever you like on the HD, much more easily.
