My system is more like what Julian describes.  I have fixed IP addresses
for some computers and the printer, and use DHCP for other computers and
VPCs.

If you change the router's IP address to 192.168.1.1 and change the
current firewall / router computer to something else, like 192.168.1.2 or
some other unused address on that net, then things should work as you
wish.  I'd also let the router do DHCP, but limit its address range to
addresses well above those you're now using.  That lets you plug in other
things that need IP addresses and use DHCP for them.
