Felmon,
The four primary OR three primary and one extended are what make up IBM(R,C)'s original FDISK type partitioning scheme. This held for DOS (vn. 2 and up; certainly 3); OS/2 (16-bit, vn. 1.x); and OS/2 (16-/32- bit hybrid versions 2 - "4.4x"). The LVM scheme (something I haven't -yet- had to deal with) was introduced with ?Warp Server? and carried over into the client (versions > 4.51?) when they were (their code base was) merged.
