I spent three months in San Jose, learning to maintain and repair the 
1401 system and worked on them until the 360-30 replaced them, with it's 
emulation program.

Yes it was core storage, 4K max unless you added an addition box that 
got you up to 16K.

You could run tape drives with it, and eventually disk drives.

You could program it from the console by flipping switches. Or, you 
could punch your program into IBM cards and load the program into memory 
from a card reader/punch.
You had to put a loader in front of your program. Load button on the 
console would issue one command, read a card, go to core location 001, 
and read the first 80 characters into the execute register. Your first 
command on the loader would have to be read another card.

It had a variable word length architecture, wonderful machine for it's day.
