well, 'Free-BSD' is not Linux, right? but my real question is did you 
actually _install_ Knoppix? I did that once and got some warnings from 
some (knowledgeable) fellows on some forum that it is not meant to be 
installed, just used as a live-CD.

as I recall, there were some problems upgrading stuff and I also 
didn't want all the software that came along with the install. 

(I switched to RedHat yrs ago before Centos and such existed, and then 
to SuSE/OpenSuSE and now a mix of the latter and Debian.

I don't think ease of install or ease of use of the GUI is the 
stumbling block to mainstream acceptance. 

quick remark about installs: I recently replaced the hard-drive in the 
laptop of a friend's daughter and using the OEM's cds reinstalled 
Vista. the install was mostly hands_off but it took _hours_! I would 
have been up and running in Linux in about 30 minutes.
