Are there any DBExpert users out there?

I am trying to set up a Calculated control as described on page 10 - 7 
of the User's Guide.   This is on a Blank Form.

I want the control to show the current date.

Creating a Text field and putting  

= dbeDate('')

in the Source attribute field leaves the control blank when I open the form.
In fact nothing I have put in the Source field puts anything in the control.
What am I doing wrong?
