It is.  You need LVM volume support if you want to volumes to span
partitions.  Otherwise, JFS works just fine in a compatibility volume and
a compatibility volume does not require LVM support.

What makes this so confusing is that LVM is not just any one thing.

JFS stores filenames in unicode.
