I guess I don't understand. Maybe the new feature(s) in Ubuntu have
been added since you last looked.
First, Ubuntu has a 'Long Term Support' level that they maintain and
support for [I believe] a two year cycle. So, if you only install the
LTS level it's a once every two year task.
Second, for the level currently running, almost every time I boot the
system, there is a red icon on the tool bar that indicates that there
are 'Updates Available' for download and install. While I don't have
extensive experience, every time I've seen this, I click the icon,
click [INSTALL UPDATES], enter the required master password, and just
let the system do its thing. Downloads and updates just happen. When
it's done, the top of the window says "Your system is up to date." At
any time, you can also open the Update Manager and click a button to
verify that there are no updates.
You can also list the updates, check the ones you want and then it will
selectively install only those. I'm sure there must be some
prerequisite checking to be sure nothing is missed, but I've not used
this approach.
While I think eCSMT is an excellent tool, the Ubuntu approach is even
more automatic. I'm not sure how much easier it can be made. Maybe
it's been too long since you looked at the improvements. You can try
the 'Live CD' without actually installing anything or disturbing your
HD.
