Hi Julian,

I and many of my friends in other computer groups recommend UBUNTU Linux. 
If you go to their web site they will send you a CD for free.  They also 
have a CD that has a stand alone version you can boot and try things without 
disturbing your hard drive - just to see what it is like.  They release new 
versions 2 or 3 times a year.  Good luck.
