This doesn't answer your question directly but I use 
BackAgain/2 and it can restore bootable partitions 
without having to do any preparation to the partition 
first.  It also allowed me to migrate to bigger drives 
by just partitioning the new drive the same as the old 
and just laying the backup onto the blank partitons.  
The only manual process in that instance is running LVM 
to get boot manager set up, but odds are you'd use LVM 
to partition the drive in the first place.  So maybe 
it'd be quicker/easier to use BA/2 to back up what you 
have than figure out how to restore your zip file.  Just 
a data point to consider.
