Last year I found that I had networking issues with Windows XP until I
made the following registry changes:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters]
"DhcpNodeType"=dword:00000004
"NodeType"=dword:00000004

It seems that the default values (type 8) were causing WinXP to first
look for a name server and then give up instead of doing a broadcast.
Type 4 says do a broadcast (which is fine for small networks) and then
look for a name server. Google will bring up a bunch of hits on this issue.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the
rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with
thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. Psalm 95:1-2
