[Discussion] Compact Flash Card vs Thumb Drive

Mark,

I have USB SD cards, compact flash, and thumb drives all working with ECS v 1.2 and
ECS v 2.0 RC6A. But the USB support in ECS RC6A is better than it is in v 1.2.

However - having said that, I have experienced compatability problems between
different USB hardware (USB hubs, USB card readers) and USB media, and USB
enabled PC machines. I have found this to be true for Windows XP as well as ECS.

Examples: I have found certain SD cards which will work in my cheapo multi-card
reader, but which will not work in a mini self-contained SD reader (the little plastic joby
that flips up and you insert the SD card to make it into a thumb drive).

I have found external USB hard drives which work on ECS 2.0 RC6A on a Thinkpad
t43P but which do not work connected to Windows XP, and will not work on my ECS v
1.2 desktop.

I have also found that sometimes the multi-card reader does not work when connected
via an USB hub but will work when directly connected to the computer.

My guess is that if compatibility problems exists with different USB equipment on
Windows XP, then it can exist everywhere with all operating systems. Including Linux,
either with the present version/flavor or a future version/flavor.

If USB problems are your main consideration, I would first suggest upgrading to RC6A
before you give up on ECS. After all - even Linux requires upgrades.

Doug

BTW - having dabbled in broadcast fax for a while, I learned that compatibility depends
on your viewpoint; I saw lots of fax machines/modems which could not connect to
other fax machines/modems.
