Hi IRA,
Are yousure it is AHCI? I know some Linux distros have issues with ACPI (power managment), as some manufacturers have a non-standard ACPI. If not that, I woudl go through each option in the BIOS. Start turning off non-essential items - bare bones configuration. Also, how about an external USB CD-ROM and boot off of USB? I got an external 5.25 case for an old DVD drive that comes in handy once in a blue moon (never throw out anything). If all else fails, perhaps using Microsoft Virtual PC or Sun VirtualBox for eCS inside of Windows (ugh).
