[Discussion] Are Speakers O.S. Agnostic?

I am fairly sure the answer is yes...

I am trying to learn a foreign language.  A ThinkPad T43 speaker is not
the greatest to learn pronunciation.  I am thinking to purchase a USB
speaker, although I think that I could use "other" kinds, since I have a
docking station.  

So, will any speaker do?
