[Discussion] intruding fonts

I'm occasionally pestered by fonts that I didn't (knowingly) install but
that intrude themselves where other fonts should be.  In several apps,
e.g. Maple V for OS/2 and StarOffice 5.1a, I sometimes find the fonts
    @Times New Roman WT J
    @Monotype Sans Duospace WT J
where something else should be, usually the same without the '@' sign.
The above fonts look quite different, and much uglier, that the corres-
ponding ones without the '@'.  Anybody have an idea what is causing this,
and how to get rid of these '@' fonts permanently?
