Derek and Jame, thanks for your responses, but I can't connect with http://start.verizon.net without having done a connect.  My Verizon supplied modem has five Ethernet ports and, of course a telephone connection to a phone line.  Since DHCP connects to the internet, I can only surmise that the connect supplies the password.  It works so I'll just keep using it.  Regards, Ira Saxe
