people over in Linux are very familiar with difficulties getting ACPI 
to play nice! it's the first thing I suspect when I get a certain kind 
of botched install (on one laptop I couldn't get audio with fiddling 
with acpi settings). my impression is the 'standard' is not very 
standard so you get different behaviors across chips. I was reading 
last night about some problem a person was having under Vista that 
might be acpi-related.
