I tried using some special backup packages for my DATA partitions and
they always seemed to be more trouble than they were worth.  I've been
using ZIP to build customized archive files and then just copying the
ZIPs to a CD.

ZIP allows you to use a file with some generalized directory/file specs
to pick/choose what you want and what will fit on a given CD.  I use
RSJ to write to the CDs.

To each his own...  But this works for me.
