LVM must be installed.

It is the only partitioning vehicle for MCP/ACP/eCS.

It is used to write the master boot record (MBR) even if you do not have 
multiple partitions (you have to find the bootable system somehow).

It is used to identify and attach USB and other removable drives (it is 
LVM that assigns the drive letter).
