No, just forget the PC completely. No desktop; eCS nor Windoze.
The Treo/Palm 5.0 has an E-Mail package and a Web browser. [Of course,
your phone service must be setup for data use, but with my
Cingular/AT&T service, it is just part of the package that I have.]
The E-Mail package is 'VersaMail.'
The Browser is just called 'Web' on my Treo 650.
For the couple of packages that I installed w/o using the Palm Desktop,
I asked the provider to just provide the *.PRC file instead of a ZIP
file. I downloaded it to eCS and then, I forwarded the file to the
E-Mail ID that I have setup for VersaMail. When the E-Mail arrived on
the Treo, it had the normal text message, with a 'link' indicating an
attached file. Click the 'link' and it asks if you want to
accept/save/install the file on the Treo. In the case of the update of
HoliDates and mVoice, clicking the 'link' found the installed package
and did the update. It also recognized the original registration so
the updated application was immediately ready to use.
While I did not specifically try it, the provider said I could go to
their site with the Treo browser and download it directly to the Treo.
Again, no eCS; no Windoze; no desktop; no USB; no HotSync required.
All smoke and mirrors on the Treo. And, for the BackupMan application,
once it is installed on the Treo, all backup/restore operations are
purely Palm OS application execution to/from the SD card.
