If all you are interested in doing is backup/restore of the Palm
software, I can recommend a stand-alone package that does not require a
PC at all.

The package will run on-demand or on an automatic schedule. Backup
files go to the SD card. And, if you are not doing automatic backups,
you can run the program itself from the SD.
I have used the Palm desktop on my Treo 650 only 2-3 times that I can
remember:
1) Prior to doing a major update from Cingular [now AT&T].
2) After the update to get my files, settings, etc., back
because the update reset the Treo to all the default,
initial settings.
I believe I also had to use the desktop to install a couple of
packages, but many of the package providers will provide a file that
can be downloaded [or attached as to E-Mail]. Click on the file and it
automatically installs. I've done several updates [e.g., HoliDates and
mVoice] that way.
