[Discussion] eCS and other woes

Brian,
While I can sympathize with you on some level, considering you are
using a T20 which should not have hardware issues, I don't really
understand some of the problems.
First, I have installed eCS 1.2MR on a T60. The problems I have
appear to be purely hardware/driver related. Specifically, There are
only three things that are keeping me from moving the systems
[actually two T60s] into full use. You should not have these problem
because you do not have brand new hardware.
1) The ethernet adapter is not working and I am waiting for
the GenMac group to respond about why. It is supposed to
be one of the supported devices.
2) The WiFi is not working because the device is a slight
variation of a device on the supported list. A GenMac
issue again.
3) There is no sound support. This is another case of brand
new hardware [so I'm told] that UniAud is not responding
to requests for feedback.
ALL three of these, in my opinion, have on thing in common: They are
all NetLabs projects and it appears that NO ONE responds from those
projects. They want sponsors [a.k.a., MONEY], and I am quite willing
to part with a sizable contribution to get these systems working. This
incentive offer seems to be falling on deaf ears.
Again, these issues should NOT BE YOUR problems.
YOUR problem seems to be that you may not have installed all of the
eCSMT updates on top of the base install. I had a lot of problems with
my systems with only the base. And, not having network access made the
update process more difficult.
But, I simply took the eCSMT, the eCSMT Download and Fixes directories
from my eCS 1.1 system and ZIPped them to a CD. Then I unzipped them
to the new eCS 1.2MR. I use the resulting directories to install the
most recent eCSMT and then installed all of the applicable fixes.
After that, almost all of the problems [except the three mentioned
above] have disappeared. Certainly, all of the issues you have
mentioned with USB are not there. I have a 12-way Reader for xD, SD,
Memory Stick, et al, are all working just fine. I have USB Flash
Drives [256MB, 1GB and 2GB] that all work fine once the maintenance was
installed. I have used those Flash Drives to transfer stuff from my
1.1 system since the updates were applied. I can also plug my FujiFilm
S5000 digital camera directly into a USB port and it looks just like
any other USB device.
I have also installed the SmartSuite starting with the 1.7 level,
updating to 1.7.3 using the fixes from the eCS web site that I have
been using on eCS 1.1. I have not done extensive testing, but so far,
the Organizer and Freelance seem to be just fine. I also use 1-2-3,
but have not had time to check that out yet. I'm not a heavy WordPro
or Approach user, so those are low on my list.
Now, the T60 is a Dual Core [two processors] system. I have installed
the SMP kernel and ACPI. With this support, both processors are
active, but I'm really not sure what the ACPI is doing or not doing. I
do have a problem with both processors active trying to use the USB
ports. But, there are supposed to be some parameters and changes
required with the latest ACPI that indicate they will fix the USB
problems. I don't quite understand exactly how/what to do with these,
and I've not had time to try to learn the details. I'll report back
when I get the USB stuff working with both processors.
Again, only the network access and the sound are holding me back...
Therefore, I guess my question to you: Have you added all the updates
to your new system? If not, I strongly suggest that you try that and
report back the state of your system.
Good luck...
Carl
