Bob,
I need to execute the code also. And, the reason for using the IBM
compiler is that we need to be able to port the source directly and
unchanged to the IBM Mainframe environment. I doubt those other
compilers are 100% compatible. [The OS/2-Win-Z/OS compilers all use
the same basic front-end, so the compatibility is excellent.]
I have submitted a formal request to IBM [via the SHARE User Group] for
a Linux version of the compiler. As of this moment, the official
response is "Acknowledged" which has no implication that they will ever
do it. Since there is already an AIX version of this compiler, it
should not be a major effort. One can only hope...
So, the idea proposed to me would be that the compiler and the code
that it generates would both be able to run under WINE. As I
understand WINE, it is essentially the same as running ODIN on OS/2.
We also have the same need for a COBOL compiler and would likely do the
same with the IBM W-doze COBOL compiler. OTOH, there are COBOL
compilers, particularly from Micro Focus, that are quite compatible
with the z/OS environment. We might have a choice in that case. PL/I
is our real concern, though.
That's really about as much as I know about it, but I hope to get more
details one of these days. If I do find more, I'll be sure to let you
know.
I suspect that we're about to be told to take this off-list, so unless
someone else on the list knows about WINE, can help us and posts
something, please reply directly to me. And, I'll do the same.
