These are not really "groups at google". They are newsgroups (aka
usenet), which were around long before html took over the web.
Google merely links to them, just as it links to most everything
else.
If you use a newreader (or some browsers) you can access newsgroups
directly through a newserver. Some free one's exist but they are
generally limited in scope. For $6/mo I subscribe to a server that
gives access to everything out there, and believe me, there is a
LOT out there....in every imaginable topic (I'm not referring only
to computing). There are at least 20 NG's in comp.os.os2.* that
are os2 specific, some are quite active while others are full of
poison. A notable difference from the yahoo groups is that it most
are not moderated.
Google for 'free nntp server' to find a server and see what is
available, you download a list of NG's (last time I checked there
were around 100k groups). Hope you have a LOT of spare time
available. Using a full blown newsgroup reader is much more
efficient than a browser.
