other expensive gear.

You should consider using the Customs and Border Protection form --
CBP Form 4457 -- Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects
Taken Abroad. This is available online
at

df>. By listing your items on this form and having it certified by a
CBP Officer before leaving the U.S. You can use this as proof that
you did not purchase these items in Canada when you return and get
caught up in taxes and duties problems.

There are instructions for completing this form on page 2 of the
form. This form is simple and easy to use and could save problems at
the border.
